Having trouble testing your new Personal Locator Beacon (PLB)? Don't worry, you're not alone. We often get calls from customers who are having similar issues, especially with the GPS self-test. This article will walk you through some common problems and solutions.

The LED Visibility Challenge

Many customers find it difficult to see the LED indicators (green and red) during daylight hours, especially in bright sunshine. This can lead them to believe their beacon isn't working correctly.

The Solution: Perform both the self-test and the GPS self-test at night or in low-light conditions. This will make it much easier to see the LED sequence and confirm your beacon's operation.

Best Practice

Location: Perform the GPS test outdoors with a clear view of the sky. Avoid obstructions like trees and buildings.

Positioning: Place the antenna in a vertical, upright position. Once the test has begun, lay the PLB on the ground (antenna still upright) and step back to observe the LEDs. Holding the unit in your hand may actually shield the unit from some satellites and result in a failed test.

By following these tips, you should be able to successfully test your PLB and have peace of mind knowing it's ready for use.
